"It's Going To Be Okay"
--

"I first discovered the name of this 1800's era two-man saw about ten years ago while delving into the lexicon of shared human knowledge and esoterica. It was intriguing to me that felling these gigantic redwood trees required two people, and only two people, to work together, pushing and pulling this massive 20 foot saw back and forth.

It was unclear why the saw was named the misery whip -- Some people said it's because the job itself was miserable, that sawing these trees was an endless task. Others claimed that the business of using a Misery Whip was dangerous in itself, with the blade carrying so much tension between two welded saw blades, especially in the moment before the tree released, that the blade could and would snap with incredible force, and seriously maim or kill the loggers using it.

It reminds me of love, of creating music, of the struggle of artists and musicians attempting to 'make it', or simply to survive. It reminds me of mental illness and how your brain can feel like it is trying to murder you sometimes, the two halves welded together. The idea that music can be a cathartic release, and also a miserable danger to the musician creating it, was poignant to me. It was meaningful and disturbing.

As to 'It's Going To Be Okay', maybe it will be. I don't know. Better to be optimistic. Grief will come, you are not immune to death's disease that was made for you. Be it plague, trauma, cancer, pandemic, or suicide. But that doesn't mean we can't try and put a smile on while the world burns. Have babies. Listen to some records. Smile. It's going to be okay." -- Paris Gulbro Patt
